FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – A 15-FURY ALERT DAY is in effect Today

Near record-breaking heat and oppressive humidity will make it difficult to spend time outdoors today. It will feel more like it’s 105 to 108 this afternoon with the combination of heat and humidity.

The dangerous high heat and humidity levels make Tuesday a 15-Fury Alert Day.

High temperatures will be in the middle 90s along with dew points in the 70s making it very difficult to spend any prolonged time outside this afternoon.

No 90s in July 2024 after so many hot June days

This 90-degree heat wave began on Saturday and is continuing at least through today but, the biggest difference will be the heat combined with oppressive humidity. You could begin to see the symptoms of heat exhaustion because your body’s evaporative cooling system won’t work properly and it will make you feel like it’s much hotter today.

High temperatures reached the 90s for the 3rd consecutive day on Monday.

Wednesday’s high temperature will be in the middle 90s, close to a record high.

We are going into our fourth day of temperatures in the 90s. Today will be the hottest day

Last August we experienced four 90-degree days. The longest streak of 90-degree heat or higher happened in August 1959 with 11 consecutive days of 90s. The current streak of 90-degree days will be more similar to August 2020 with five days of 90-degree heat in a row.

The longest streak of 90 degree weather happened in 1947

It won’t be much hotter than Monday but with dew points in the 70s, it will make your body very uncomfortable as your natural cooling system won’t work correctly. Your sweat doesn’t evaporate so your body doesn’t cool efficiently.

Take some steps to stay safe during this heatwave. Make sure you limit your time outdoors during peak daytime heating. Drink plenty of water, take frequent breaks indoors or in the shade if you have to be outside, and ensure you look before you lock your car to make sure you have all the kids and pets with you and out of the vehicle!
