Food storage and roaches. Warner Robins restaurant fails routine health inspection

    By Becky Purser,

Improper food storage and roaches in the main kitchen area contributed to a Warner Robins restaurant failing its routine health inspection in June.

American Philly & Wings at 819 Russell Parkway received a “U” for “unsatisfactory compliance” with a score of 59 at its routine inspection June 5, according to what was reported Friday in the state health department’s online portal.

The restaurant bounced back with a 91 for an “A” for “food safety excellence” at its required followup inspection June 19.

Environmental health inspectors assign grades based on how many points are deducted from 100, with a score of 69 and below considered failing. Follow-up inspections are required when a restaurant fails its routine inspection and generally take place within 10 days.

    Failing Grade

At its routine inspection June 5, American Philly and Wings lost points for raw beef stored next to mushrooms in the walk-in cooler. To protect food from cross contamination, raw, ready-to-eat animal food such as beef and fish should be kept separate from raw, ready-to-eat fruits and vegetables, according to the inspection report.

The restaurant also was cited for failing to keep shell eggs at the proper temperature for food safety, according to the report.

The health inspector also found several containers of raw chicken, raw beef and ready-to-eat vegetables in the walk-in-cooler without a date mark, according to the report. Date marking is required to ensure food is not served beyond seven days for food safety.

Additionally, tomatoes were in a hand-washing sink in the front service area, and bags of carrots and cabbage were found stored on the floor of the walk-in cooler, according to the report. Hand-washing sinks should only be used for hand-washing, and food should be protected from contamination by storing at least 6 inches above the floor.

The inspector also saw “live and dead German roaches in the main kitchen area and in traps behind the counter top in the main kitchen next to a reach-in cooler storing yum yum sauces,” the report reads.

“Dead or trapped insects, and other pests shall be removed from control devices and the premises at a frequency that prevents their accumulation, decomposition, or the attraction of pests. Please work with your reputable pest control company for pest control,” the report reads.

    At its prior routine inspections, the restaurant earned an 87 Feb. 2; a 97 Aug. 9, 2023; a 92 April 10, 2023; and a 100 Dec. 28, 2022.
