WARREN (WWJ) -- Warren Police detectives are investigating after more than 20 shots were fired between people in two cars along 8 Mile Road near Mound Rd., Tuesday morning.

According to police, nearly two-dozen shell casings were found on the ground on the Detroit side of 8 Mile following the incident during rush hour, at around 8 a.m.

Detroit Police Department 11th Precinct Commander Eric Decker said it's believed that the casings in Detroit are connected to the shootout that started in Warren.

"So, due to that Warren's going to handle this," Decker told WWJ Newsradio 950's Mike Campbell and other reporters. "They believe it's connected to a previous shooting, so they're collecting the evidence casings. I believe they're caliber consistent to their previous shooting generally in, or close in proximit

Decker said DPD officers blocked eastbound traffic on 8 Mile at Syracuse, two blocks west of Mound Road, while Warren investigators took photos collected evidence.

Decker said "well over 20" shots were fired, but he doesn't have an exact count.

As for what led to the shootout, Decker said it's believed it stemmed from another previous shooting.

"There's a vehicle that was shot up; fortunately no one was injured inside that vehicle. They went to the Warren Police Department," Decker said. "Apparently that person, or somebody associated with that person, was either recently shot at, or shot in the last couple days to a week on the Warren side."

There is no information about any arrests at this time.

No further details were released, and the Warren PD is not yet commenting as the investigation continues.
