WARREN (WWJ) — A 71-year-old Warren man has been charged after admitting to killing his wife last Saturday before trying to take his own life .

James Hentges was arraigned Tuesday on one count of first-degree murder for killing his 70-year-old wife, Cheryl Hentges.

Warren police were called to the couple’s home on Loretta Avenue near Stephens and Ryan around 2 p.m. on July 13 after Hentges called 911.

He told dispatch that he had killed his wife inside their home several hours prior and said he tried to commit suicide by overdose and slitting his wrists. The Macomb County Prosecutor's Office alleges Hentges smothered her to death with a pillow.

Warren officers quickly responded to the home and arrested Hentges, who had bandaged wrists consistent with a suicide attempt, officials said. Officers found his wife dead inside the home.

Hentges was taken to the hospital, where he was medically cleared to be taken to the Warren jail. During an interview with investigators Hentges admitted his direct involvement in his wife’s murder.

Hentges, who officials say has no prior criminal convictions, pleaded not guilty during Tuesday’s arraignment in 37th District Court.

His next court date is scheduled for July 25.
