Benjamin Talanca was scheduled to be arraigned Monday morning on misdemeanor charges of assault and cruelty to animals. It stems from an encounter on Mahoning Avenue that happened Saturday night.

According to a police report, the woman told officers she saw the man, now identified as Talanca, hitting the dog and striking it with its leash during a walk.

The woman told officers she asked him not to hit the dog. That’s when she says he spit on her and threw an iced tea can at her. A passerby said he saw the man throw the iced tea can at the victim and that he almost stepped in because he feared Talanca was going to strike her.

    Talanca was apprehended.

The dog, named Mick, is now in the care of the Healthy Hearts and Paws Project.
