Are Elephants Coming Back to Brookfield Zoo?!
You may remember a time not too long ago where you could see majestic elephants roaming around the pachyderm house at Brookfield Zoo. For about 75 years starting with Ziggy, elephants of all kinds called Brookfield home, but after some ups and downs, in 2010 the last last elephant was moved to a zoo in California. Brookfield Zoo hasn’t had an elephant since. Lincoln Park Zoo hasn’t had one since 2005 and likely never will given how small it is.
Celebrate Italian heritage with the Amici Club
Amici Club is a social organization for anyone wishing to enhance their appreciation of Italian heritage and culture. The club was founded by Maria Mastrolanardo, who moved with her family to Naperville in 2004 from an Italian neighborhood in Chicago. Disappointed that she could not find stores that sold the Italian foods she was used to, Maria posted a notice in a local restaurant asking others with the same problem to meet for lunch.
Benefit Concert Planned to Help Illinois Rock Museum Recover From Storm Damage
The storm that ripped through the Joliet area on Sunday morning damaged quite a few buildings in downtown Joliet, including the Illinois Rock and Roll Museum. The huge guitar statue on the fascade — dubbed Gigantar — was not damaged, but the roof was, which has also led to some water damage on the top floor. Thankfully, none of the exhibits were affected, but the costs are adding up to fix the building.

Pet pic of the week
This orange boy is from the streets and is ready to settle down into being a housecat. Martino loves to curl up in your lap and will sometimes even give you kisses on your nose! He seems to be indifferent to other cats, but he does not like dogs. His favorite pastime is looking out the window and reminiscing about his time living outdoors, so he would probably love a catio or leash training. Martino is 2 years old, microchipped, neutered and fully vaccinated. He is approved for children 10+ and his adoption fee is $75. If you would like to give him a chance at a new life, visit him at the Hinsdale Humane Society Tuthill Family Pet Rescue & Resource Center, visit http://www.hinsdalehumanesociety.org or call (630) 323-5630. ‘Owl Guy’ gives hoot of a presentation
Mark Glenshaw gave a fascinating talk on “How to Find Owls in your Neighborhood,” at the Museum Learning Center recently, sponsored by CCC Cabral Collision Center. Owls often roost in dense evergreens. They’ll also perch close to the trunk in other kinds of trees, where they’re easier to spot once autumn leaves fall. Some species roost inside tree cavities, and you may be able to spot them looking out of the holes on warm days. While owls are largely active around dusk and at night, it’s much easier (and safer) to look for them by light of day. Winter is also the best season to scout. Probably the best way to zero in on where to look is to listen for them with their distinctive calls. These were just a few of the tips he presented to the audience.
