WARWICK, R.I. (WPRI) — Warwick City Councilwoman Donna Travis pleaded no contest on Tuesday on a misdemeanor charge of filing a false document.

The charge is the result of an investigation into a transfer of property involving Travis and the Oakland Beach Real Estate Association, according to a joint press release from Rhode Island State Police and the R.I. Attorney General’s Office.

In court, a prosecutor said the lot at 735 Oakland Beach Ave. was donated to the association in 1937. Travis and her husband live next to the property at 733 Oakland Ave.

The prosecution says in August 2021, documentation was submitted to the city of Warwick conveying the property at 735 Oakland Beach Ave. from the association to Travis and her husband for $0.

Through their investigation, state police reviewed the association’s bylaws which say none of its properties can be sold or transferred unless a majority of members vote to do so during an official meeting.

According to the prosecution, detectives interviewed multiple members of the association and determined that no vote to transfer the property to Travis and her husband took place.

Travis’s attorney said she will be giving the property back to the association as part of an agreement with the prosecution. She received a one year suspended sentence and one year of probation.

Travis previously came under fire for not disclosing her involvement in a nonprofit that leased an Oakland Beach Avenue property from the city.

Travis is not running for reelection this year.
