WARWICK, R.I. (WPRI) — This week’s Cardi’s Furniture & Mattresses Hometown Sports Hero is Molly Green.

A four-year starter at catcher for the Prout School, Green enjoyed her best season as a Senior, hitting .453 to help the Crusaders to a 12-6 record in Division I play and earning a spot on the Coaches Association First Team All-State squad. She carried that success to her final season with her Bombers Elite travel team, hitting .419 with 15 RBI’s.

“Molly’s one of the hardest workers we’ve had in the program,” said Bombers Elite Head Coach Carlos Rodas. “She came in with a chip on her shoulder and had a lot to prove. She was young. She was a shortstop and a catcher, and we stuck her behind the plate a lot and you could just see. I think at the time she was our 3 rd catcher and by the end of that year, she was starting every game.”

She found the sport by following her older sister Madelyn’s lead.

“So, everything she did, I just got into,” Green said. “So, when she started Rec, I just followed her,, and I just stayed with it and one day someone needed a catcher. I threw on the gear and here I am now, 12 years later.”

Molly’s growth on the diamond earning her a scholarship to play at Assumption University. Last Spring the Greyhounds earned their first NCAA appearance since 2012 and made program history by reaching their first ever East Regional Final. Adn their Head Coach knows about Rhode Island talent. Stacey Mayer helped Lincoln High School win back-to-back State Softball Titles in 2012 and 2013.

“Yeah, it’s crazy. It’s almost surreal now, because the clock is coming down,” Green said. “I’m really thinking about getting my Assumption workouts in and learning the plays for Assumption and it’s starting to feel more real. It’s nerve wracking but I’m really excited to get out there.”

“Molly, I think is going to have a great future at Assumption,” Rodas said. “She’s prepared herself. She’s always been mature for her age which I think has served her well. And yes, I look for nothing but great things for her at Assumption.”
