Looking at the final score between Waseca and St. Peter, it would be easy to assume nothing went wrong or out of sync for the Bluejays in their 36-0 home win. Mistakes early on set the tone though, limiting Waseca before their explosive offense finally hit the gas and wouldn't be kept out of the endzone after the first quarter.

With the win, Waseca improves to 1-1 (1-0 BSC) on the season.

The Saints received the opening kickoff but their drive stalled after Brandyn Jascha sacked the St. Peter quarterback for a loss of eight on third down, forcing a punt. Damarius and Deron Russell were both back deep for Waseca and after initially muffing the punt, Damarius brought it up field several yards before the St. Peter special teams unit stripped the ball loose and recovered it, earning themselves a first down in Bluejay territory.

The Waseca defense once again proved up to the task though, forcing a quick three and out that resulted in St. Peter punting the ball again, this time having it downed at the Waseca nine. On second and short, the Bluejays appeared to break a massive play wide open when Damarius took a swing pass right before bouncing all the way back for an 83-yard score, but a flag for holding brough the ball all the way back inside the 10.

The Bluejays wouldn't be deterred though and on third and 11, quarterback Carson Ohnstad called his own number and was able to shift pass a handful of would-be tacklers to secure a 12-yard first down run. The next play saw Ohnstad connect with Damarius on a 19 yard pass as the first quarter ended, and seconds into the second, the duo once again connected with Russell hauling in a touchdown pass over a Saint defender. Owen Rupe drilled the PAT to give Waseca the 7-0 lead.

St. Peter returned the following kickoff to midfield and a personal foul after the play by Waseca, advanced the ball to the Bluejay 38. The Saints wouldn't do anything with the great field position though when a third down pass attempt was broken up by Koltyn Quillen.

Waseca's next possession saw the team manage to convert a long third down on a deep pass from Ohnstad to Deron Russell, but an after-the-play unsportsmanlike penalty placed the ball back near the original line of scrimmage. Facing a third and 14 after a sack on second down, Ohnstad tossed a screen pass to Deven Parpart on the right side and he followed his blocking perfectly, breaking through the defense untouched for 34 yards before being caught from behind at the 11.

Then, on fourth and one from the two-yard line, Ohnstad performed the quarterback sneak and along with the line, plowed into the endzone, putting the Bluejays up 14-0 after the Rupe PAT. The Waseca defense once again forced a three and out and the team had a chance to score as the first half would down, but a catch in bounds with just five seconds left in the half resulted in the clock ticking to zeros and Waseca settling for the 14-0 lead.

The Waseca defense was stellar throughout the first half, limiting St. Peter to just two yards of offense while not allowing a single first down.

The Bluejays received the opening kickoff in the second half and proceeded to drive down the field, eventually scoring on another quarterback sneak from Ohnstad. After an offsides on the PAT, Waseca attempted a two-point play but did not convert, leaving the score at 20-0.

Another St. Peter three and out resulted in a punt that saw Damarius catch the ball before tossing it back to Deron on the reverse. Deron took the ball to the edge for an additional 40 yards to the Saints 20. Shortly afterwards, Micah Allen-Haas took the handoff from Ohnstad five yards into the endzone.

The final score of the night would come on Waseca's next possession as Ohnstad connected with Damarius Russell on a wheel route for a 17 yard touchdown, putting the Bluejays up 36-0 before both teams focused the final minutes on substitutions.

Waseca is scheduled to return to the gridiron Friday, Sep. 13, when the team travels to Marshall for a conference showdown with the Tigers. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
