Washburn has been awarded a $135,748 Assistance to Firefighters Grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to upgrade its aging self-contained breathing apparatus equipment.

The new SCBA (self-contained breathing apparatus) units funded by the grant are lighter and more reliable, and also incorporate advanced safety features absent in the department’s current equipment.

"This grant comes at a pivotal time for our department," Washburn Fire Chief Mark Guenther said in the release announcing the grant. "Our existing SCBA units are over 21 years old and increasingly outdated. The grant allows us not only to replace these aging units but also to redirect funds toward other critical needs within our department."

The grant funds will cover the acquisition of 16 harnesses, 32 air bottles and 24 masks, all of which will be individually fitted to ensure optimal comfort and functionality for each firefighter. The department will contribute a required 5% match of $6,787 from its fundraising efforts, bringing the total project investment to $142,536.00.

Washburn Mayor Mary Motiff expressed excitement for the grant.

"This is excellent news for Washburn and our neighboring communities. The new equipment will enhance our firefighters' ability to protect lives and property for years to come. I commend our fire department for their dedication in securing this crucial funding,” she said in the release.
