Remember when Dan Quinn joined The Junkies just after being hired and played word association, and his answer of “game-changer” for Jayden Daniels led to three months of wondering if he had tipped the team’s hand for their preference as the No. 2 pick (which was, indeed, Daniels, and was something the team revealed post-draft they were worried about)?
Yeah, well, on Tuesday, Brian Keefe, who was officially named as Wizards head coach last week and introduced Tuesday after a 39-game stint as interim bench boss last season, was smart enough not to fall for the same ploy from Grant & Danny.
“Two-part question: generally, what are you sort of looking for in terms of the attributes and characteristics you seem to value in a player, and what kind of thing are you looking for here in in this draft to kind of transform the team – and part two of that question is, who are you guys taking at No. 2?” Danny asked.
“So, first of all, I'm smart enough to not answer that question,” Keefe laughed. “I have great trust in our front office, they're the experts on this stuff. Obviously, they'll probably ask my opinion on stuff at the appropriate time, but these guys are the ones who put the work in and have been out watching guys all year. I know we're all excited to add players at both draft positions that we have in the first round that fit into our environment, want to be workers and get better, and I know we'll find those type of guys. That's going to be an exciting time for us and all wizards fans.”
Fair enough, but then GP tried, asking Keefe that if he could choose between visiting France or Storrs, Connecticut – homes of possibly four Top 5 picks – which would it be…and again, Keefe didn’t bite.
“I'm gonna refrain from answering that question; I'm gonna make somebody upset whatever way I answer,” Keefe said.
GP explained the Quinn thing after that one, and how the team was worried Quinn slipped, and all Keefe could say was, ‘smart…I know how to refrain myself!”
