A 24-year-old Washington, D.C., woman who is alleged to have intentionally injured a law enforcement officer in Calvert County April 30 while fleeing the scene of a theft has been served an indictment that includes a charge of attempted first-degree murder.

According to court records, the defendant — identified as Mikayla Keishon Jones — had been employed as a security guard prior to her arrest on May 14.

In total, Jones is facing 11 indictment counts. The indictment also charges Jones with attempted second-degree murder, first-degree assault, second-degree assault on a police office, second-degree assault, felony theft, conspiracy to commit theft, and five counts of fleeing and eluding.

The lead investigator of the case was Calvert County Sheriff’s Office Detective Wyatt McDowell.

According to the indictment, Jones, along with two unidentified individuals, stole perfume from Ulta Beauty Inc., which is located in Prince Frederick and has been the frequent site of shoplifting incidents.

According to court records, Jones was driving a Honda bearing D.C. tags on Route 4 after the alleged theft. Deputy John Lee III attempted to stop the Honda but was injured in the process.

Sheriff’s office spokesperson Kristen Leitch told Southern Maryland News Lee “was hospitalized as a result of the incident and has been undergoing treatment for injuries received. He is currently back on the job.”

Details of exactly how Lee was injured were not immediately available. Charging documents related to the case were not available at the county courthouse.

In addition to criminal charges, Jones received several traffic citations, including tickets for speeding, reckless driving, negligent driving and failure to stop and render aid to an injured person.

After McDowell’s investigation identified Jones as the suspect, an arrest warrant was issued May 9 and served five days later. Jones is being held without bond.

According to court records, Jones’ initial appearance in Calvert County Circuit Court is scheduled for June 24 before Judge Mark Chandlee.

The state’s case against Jones will be prosecuted by Benjamin Lerner, assistant state’s attorney.
