Eugene Shen’s tenure with the Commanders is over.

As reported by our own JP Finlay, Shen is leaving the organization, but it appears he is not gone completely, based on this statement released by a Commanders spokesperson:

“After successfully supporting the transition to new ownership last season, Eugene Shen will be transitioning out of the Washington Commanders organization. He is currently in discussions to support HBSE initiatives.”

Finlay further reports that per a source, ‘all parties are on good terms,’ and while new SVP of Football Operations Brandon Sosna will lead the analytics group with GM Adam Peters, it ‘sounds like Shen could land a similar analytical role in (Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment).’

Shen was hired as the Commanders’ senior vice president of football strategy in October, after spending almost a decade in the analytics departments in Miami, Baltimore, and Jacksonville – most recently as the Jaguars’ vice president of football analytics. He came to the NFL from analyst jobs in the finance sector, where he wrked for 11 years after earning his MBA from MIT in 1998.

However, Shen’s hire was made during the end of the Ron Rivera era, so it appears that after hiring Peters and Sosna – and announcing some other promotions and title changes this week – the Commanders have gotten what they need from Shen, and may transition him into a different role within Josh Harris’ sports empire.

Sosna was hired last month after serving as the Lions’ senior director of football administration, and one of the title changes announced was the previous SVP of Football Ops, Rob Rogers, moving to a new role as VP of Football Administration.
