A native of France , Sarr was drafted by the Wizards with the No. 2 selection.

After being picked, he was interviewed by ESPN’s Monica McNutt .

“Everywhere I’ve played has built me for this moment,” Sarr said.

He then gave credit to his family , specifically his young brother Olivier, who played college basketball at Wake Forest and Kentucky before going undrafted in 2021.

“Everything I learned is through [Olivier],” Sarr said.

McNutt noticed that Sarr was fighting tears and she asked him why he was emotional.

“I know what it’s like to go undrafted, and to be a top pick now is really special,” he said.

Sarr reportedly turned down a workout with the Atlanta Hawks in the pre-draft process.

The Hawks selected the France native Zaccharie Risacher with the first pick in the draft.

Last season, Sarr averaged 9.4 points with 4.3 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game on 51.6 percent shooting in the NBL last season.

He played with the Perth Wildcats in Australia during that campaign.

Sarr posted a career-high 18 points and five blocks in a win in January.

He’ll join numerous recent NBL players to be drafted, including the likes of LaMelo Ball, Josh Giddey, and Ousmane Dieng, among others.

Sarr also spent two years in the U.S. with Overtime Elite, which is a developmental league.

Washington will look to plug Sarr into its starting five with stars Kyle Kuzma and Jordan Poole.
