LAS VEGAS — General manager Brian MacLellan was trying to play his cards close to the vest as the Washington Capitals finished up a busy 2024 NHL Draft, not trying to share too much while also acknowledging that D.C. still has work to do this summer.

MacLellan said after the draft that the team was happy with its performance, as Washington acquired Logan Thompson and added a number of promising prospects, while also shipping out Beck Malenstyn in order to draft Cole Hutson.

"I thought we did really well," MacLellan said, adding, "I think everything worked out well. We got some good size on the wing, we got a couple of different defensive prospects, we got a goalie that can play with us and a couple projects, too. We feel real good about what we accomplished."

MacLellan did note that the NHL roster still has some room for improvement, as the team wants to change up the defense and evaluate more potential moves tweaks the board this summer.

"We're working on trying to make some changes there," MacLellan said.

Some names that could be looked at include Trevor van Riemsdyk and Nick Jensen, who both came up in talks around the 2024 NHL Trade Deadline.

Beyond that, MacLellan said that the team will also explore free agency in addition to the trade route and see if there are any other additions that could benefit the club going forward.

"We're going to shop around and see what we can find," MacLellan said.
