July 4 forecast: High humidity, soaring temperatures, and possible storms

As Independence Day celebrations rapidly approach Washington, D.C., the threat of evening thunderstorms could postpone or cancel the annual fireworks display.

The heat will hit early, reaching 80 degrees before 10 a.m., and will reach its peak of 93 degrees around 5 p.m., with winds at 5-10 mph. Humidity will rise up to 81%, and the 'feels like' temperature could reach 101 degrees.

Storms will start brewing in the afternoon, coming down around 9 p.m. and possibly interrupting the fireworks, which are scheduled to begin around 9 p.m. at the National Mall. In the case of inclement weather or lightning, the fireworks display may be postponed or canceled by the National Park Service.

Friday, July 5, is more of the same: Temperatures reaching 90 degrees, with scattered thunderstorms expected in the afternoon. The rest of the weekend will be a few degrees cooler but much the same. Sunday doesn't call for any rain.

If you plan on being outdoors this July 4, comfortable summer clothing with precautionary rain slickers or umbrellas might be the right combination to take on this year’s festivities in the capital.
