Two women have been arrested and charged with first-degree murder and an armed felony in connection with the death of 53-year-old Fasil Teklemariam in his apartment in Washington, D.C. Authorities reported that the duo used Teklemariam’s severed thumb to access his phone and steal money.

According to TOO FAB , police were led to one of the suspects, Tiffany Gray,22, after Teklemariam filed a complaint against her in October 2023. He claimed that Gray had stolen his phone and made unauthorized transactions through an app totaling $1,800. Court documents allege that Gray and her accomplice, Audrey Miller,19, used his severed thumb to access a payment app on his phone, making several purchases for alcohol, marijuana, and Uber rides.

Evidence found at the crime scene also revealed that there was an attempt to clean the apartment to hide any evidence of the murder. Still, forensic investigators found bloody and other stains using forensic ink. Officers believe Teklemariam was murdered on April 1, but his body was not discovered until April 5.

An autopsy report revealed Teklemariam sustained multiple blunt force fractures to the head and a severe stab wound that punctured his stomach, small intestine, aorta, and spine. An arrest affidavit for Miller said the victim had multiple cuts on his legs, a cut on his right hand, and his thumb had been severed. Surveillance footage showed both suspects and two other men wearing masks and removing items from the victim’s apartment, including electronics, in the days before his death and the discovery of his body.

In Maryland, Gray was apprehended on July 1 by the Capital Area Region Fugitive Task Force. Her extradition to Washington D.C. is pending, and witnesses also confirmed that Teklemariam was Gray’s sugar daddy and she participated in sex work. She also used various aliases to hide her identity from authorities and was accused of stealing from previous romantic partners found on dating apps.

Miller, who has no fixed address according to court documents, was arrested on June 21
