    DC police officer, 2 women hurt in shooting after basketball game in Southwest

    WASHINGTON ( DC News Now ) — Police said they were looking for the person or people responsible for a shooting that took place at the end of a basketball game Thursday night that left three people, including a police officer, hurt.

    The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) said that just before 11:30 p.m., police were monitoring the game at a basketball court in the 1200 block of Canal St. SW. As the game ended, officers were walking through the court when they heard gunshots.

    Police said a woman, who had been shot, was taken to the hospital. A short time later, officers found out that another woman, who was shot ner the basketball court, arrived at the hospital.

    Both women were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

    According to the D.C. Police Union , a bullet struck an officer in the chest. The union said the officer was wearing a vest and was not hurt seriously. He was taken to the hospital for evaluation.

    After the shooting, investigators searched through cameras and discovered that a red SUV was seen leaving the area.

    As of Friday, police were still looking for the person or people involved in the shooting.

    The basketball courts on Canal Street SW are a known hangout spot and place where you’ll often find people playing pick-up basketball games, even into the overnight hours. It sits right next to the King Greenleaf Recreation Center. MPD’s First District Station is directly across the street.
