The Washington Commanders aren’t ready to name rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels the starter yet.

So said Commanders head coach Dan Quinn on Tuesday at the first press conference of training camp.

“It’s not a secret, but it is a journey and a process,” Quinn said . “As we’re going — when he’s ready, we’ll know. When he’s ready, he’ll also know.”

The comments, of course, merely delay the inevitable and are a conservative–but not unusual–approach to high-profile rookie passers. Commanders general manager Adam Gase took the same approach when commenting on the situation.

Daniels, the second overall pick and former Heisman Trophy winner, will eventually get the nod over journeymen Marcus Mariota and Jeff Driskel. But he’ll have to “earn” the title through practices and preseason, though nothing so far has suggested he won’t.

Quinn and the Commanders will likely do the obvious later in training camp after a few exhibitions. After all, Daniels has recently been compared to C.J. Stroud and some think he’ll have a better season than No. 1 pick Caleb Williams .
