Former Washington Commanders draft pick quickly lands with NFC East team on waivers

The Washington Commanders continue to move on from some draft picks of the Ron Rivera era —and at least one will head to an NFC East rival.

Cornerback Christian Holmes, let go by the Commanders over the weekend, was quickly scooped up by the New York Giants on waivers.

A seventh-round pick by the Commanders in 2022, the team moved on early in camp while trying to add depth elsewhere in the form of defensive tackle Taylor Stallworth.

While Holmes didn’t break into the base defense often, he initially did well enough over his first two seasons to stick on final rosters and have a heavy presence on special teams.

The team’s willingness to let him go speaks to its faith in the depth at the spot, including an undrafted free agent such as Chigozie Anusiem. Mike Sainristil also joined the depth chart in the second round, so it is only natural to see the back end of that chart thin out a bit as the summer continues.

As for the Giants, they just keep taking NFC East talent off the waiver wire , especially at cornerback. Last week, the team claimed Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Mario Goodrich.
