The FBI launched an investigation into an alleged Iranian hack of the Trump campaign.

The announcement is a step up from the agency's previous statements, in which it only said that it was aware of the reports. The allegations were first revealed in a Friday statement from Microsoft, which said that Iranian-linked hackers sent a spear phishing email to a high-ranking Trump campaign official from the compromised account of another official.

“We can confirm the FBI is investigating this matter,” the FBI told the Washington Post in a statement.

A large vetting document regarding Trump's running mate, Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH), based on publicly available information, was stolen and emailed to media outlets including Politico and the Washington Post. Trump decried the hack as not "a nice thing to do!"

“We were just informed by Microsoft Corporation that one of our many websites was hacked by the Iranian Government – Never a nice thing to do!” Trump said in a post on Truth Social . “They were only able to get publicly available information but, nevertheless, they shouldn’t be doing anything of this nature.”

“Iran and others will stop at nothing, because our Government is Weak and Ineffective, but it won’t be for long,” he continued. “What Iran doesn’t realize is that I will make the World a better and safer place, and that’s good for them, also!”
