Gov. Doug Burgum (R-ND) suggested Monday that Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign will continue to “flip flop” in the election cycle, including on its preferences for next month’s presidential debate on ABC News.
A recent report said the Harris campaign wants to change the microphone policy back to having the microphones for both candidates on throughout the entire debate because former President Donald Trump could say something if he loses his composure. This request comes after the Biden campaign asked CNN to mute the microphones of candidates when it was not their turn to talk during their debate in June.
“Well, I think the debate about the debate is going to continue to go on, and I think that the Harris campaign is going to continue to try to do what they’re doing," Burgum said on Fox News's America's Newsroom. "They flip-flopped on everything else, they hide behind quotes from anonymous aides, and I think they’ll do anything they can to try to get out of a debate with President Trump, and if that means ‘hey, we’re going to keep asking for rules that are unreasonable and with complete bias and advantage to them,’ we’ll just see where it happens to go."
Burgum added that the Harris campaign wants to “stay in the vault inside the basement” and one way Harris can continue to remain hidden from the public is not to debate Trump.
The former president questioned why he should participate in the debate with Harris on ABC News and said she turned down other offers to debate him from various networks, which is the latest statement he's made that casts doubt on his willingness to debate Harris. Trump offered to debate Harris on Fox News earlier this month.
Jason Miller, senior adviser to Trump, told the Washington Examiner that the Harris campaign is “clearly concerned about what they’re seeing” from her performance in her debate preparation. He said her campaign “is looking for an off-ramp to get out of the debate,” as this is “the only explanation” for its request to change the debate rules.
ABC News’s debate between Trump and Harris is scheduled for Sept. 10, and a vice presidential debate between Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) and Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN), hosted by CBS News, is scheduled for Oct. 1.

Ahead of the debate, Burgum encouraged voters to demand answers from Harris because she has yet to do a one-on-one interview with the press since joining the 2024 presidential race last month. He argued the country has never had a candidate who evades answering questions from the press so close to the election, and said voters can assume her policies are the same as President Joe Biden’s until she says otherwise.
Last month, Burgum revealed Trump referred to him as “Mr. Secretary,” which is a hint that the governor may have a cabinet role if the former president wins. Burgum was rumored to be on Trump’s short list for vice presidential candidates but the role ultimately went to Vance .
