Louisiana becomes latest state to push back on noncitizen voting

Republican-led states have made a push against noncitizen voting as the November election approaches, and Louisiana is joining that effort.

Gov. Jeff Landry (R-LA) announced an executive order on Monday designed to reaffirm that voting in elections is only for U.S. citizens by including a disclaimer on forms from state agencies that provide voter registration applications, reminding applicants of that law forbidding noncitizens from registering to vote.

"The right to vote in United States elections is a privilege reserved for American citizens because citizenship should mean something. In Louisiana, election integrity is a top priority," Landry said at a press conference on Monday.

The disclaimer on the forms will say, "The Louisiana Constitution prohibits non-citizens from registering and voting. Therefore, it is illegal for non-citizens to register and vote in Louisiana."

The push from Republicans on election integrity has been vocalized at the state and federal levels, with former President Donald Trump championing bills aimed at curbing noncitizen voting, which is already against federal law. In some cities, laws have been passed allowing noncitizens to vote in local elections but not in state or federal races.

Among the states recently pushing election integrity efforts, Texas and Virginia cleaned their voter rolls, ridding them of inactive and, in some cases, ineligible voters. Texas announced it had taken 1.1 million "ineligible" voters off its rolls, including more than 6,500 noncitizens who were on the rolls.

Virginia announced that roughly 6,303 noncitizens were taken off the voter rolls in the Old Dominion after Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R-VA) issued an executive order to strengthen election systems ahead of November.

Also included in Youngkin's executive order was calling for the use of paper ballots rather than voting machines in the commonwealth.
