    Free clinic offering primary care expands to Crossville

    CROSSVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — An effort to bring more health care to East Tennessee is expanding again as Saint Mary’s Legacy Mobile Medical Clinic comes to Crossville.

    The legacy clinic grew from the closure of Saint Mary’s Hospital in Knoxville as an effort to keep its charitable mission going. Through its regular visits to Crab Orchard in Cumberland County for the last 10 years, the Diocese of Knoxville learned that more than half of the patients that visit them in Crab Orchard Drive from Crossville.

    They said this expansion would allow them to better serve their patients. The clinic offers a range of primary care services including treatment plans provided by health care professionals, prescriptions, laboratory work and more. All services offered by Saint Mary’s Legacy Clinic are free of charge.

    “We help the people get from illness to health and get the people where they want to go in life,” said Martin Vargas, executive director of St Mary’s Legacy Clinic. “We even have a mobile lung coach that does a CT scan for all of your health care needs.”

    The clinic will be at the Saint Alphonsus location on the fourth Tuesday of each month and will continue Crab Orchard visits on the second Tuesday of each month. In 2022, the clinic expanded to Scott County . This clinic is held on-site at St. Jude Catholic Church on the third Tuesday of each month.     Saint Mary’s also joined with SACS , a nonprofit that financial support for utility bills and rent bills, food, clothing vouchers, auto parts, and more. SACS is at Saint Alphonsus on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

    “So, they take care of their physical needs, their needs of nourishment, shelter. St. Mary’s Legacy Clinic and its partners provide their other needs. We take care of primary healthcare, helping the people get from illness to health,” said Vargas.

    “People are in need and we’re here to help them with their needs. Mostly corporal, but we can help spiritually if we need to. We can help in many ways,” said John Kopmeier, the assistant director of SACS.

    Vargas also shared that Saint Mary’s is holding a benefit concert for the clinic on May 15 at 5 p.m. at the Grove in Fairfield Glade. During the event, people will be able to tour the clinic truck.
