MARYVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) — Maryville blasted past Heritage in their season opener by a score of 51-0. Senior Matthew Covert was a big part of making that happen on both sides of the ball.

Covert stuffed the stat sheet with 10 tackles, two TFLs, a safety, an interception, a fumble recovery and a touchdown.

The senior said that the interception was his favorite moment of the game.

“Just dropping back into coverage, I always like getting an interception it’s one of my favorite things to do and I happened to get it week one.”

Putting together such a dominant performance right off the bat is a great stepping stone for the rest of Covert’s season, but really he was most proud of the entire team’s effort.

“Good team win, we went out there and did what he needed to do and you know team looked great, offense looked amazing and defense performed the way they needed to perform,” said the senior.

A season that will Covert’s be last at Maryville, “It’s meant a lot, coaches are amazing, players are amazing, the whole schools amazing and it’s just been great,” he said.
