    ‘A lot of mess:’ Branch cuts through living room at Waterloo home while Beryl remnants hit

    ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — News 8 went to Seneca County, Wayne County, and here in Monroe County on the hunt for damage caused by heavy rain and strong winds Wednesday.

    Two tornados touch down in Western New York as Beryl remnants hit

    While most areas we stopped by were clear of any, most saw abrupt downpours and some fallen trees.

    Our drive started in Monroe County. At around 2 p.m., the skies were dark, and the rain was strong.

    Our first stop: Sodus Point. Despite the weather and warnings, those who live in the area still celebrating the Village’s annual Blow Off Day. People spending hours on boats and jet skis, with first responders patrolling the waters for any needed assistance.

    The rain on and off and dark skies. A quick check of Geneva afterwards, NYSEG trucks were going up and down streets checking for any down power lines or branches.

    And lastly in Seneca County, one homeowner in Waterloo says when she came home, she was met with a damaging surprise.

    “The tree that they’re about to cut down here in a few minutes,” Nicole said. “A big branch fell off on top of it and went straight down into the living room.”

    Crews immediately getting to work to take the rest of the tree down. Nicole says thankfully no one was home when this happened, and luckily nothing inside the home was damaged.

    “I was more worried that the damage was going to be worse than it was. It actually has been very minimal. It went through the two beams of the house, so it didn’t do any structural damage, just a lot of cosmetic damage, and a lot of mess.”

    And at around 4:30 p.m., National Grid had reported nearly 5,000 customers without power mainly in Livingston County. Power has since been restored in most affected areas, according to the outage maps.
