The fickle Wisconsin springtime weather allowed for plenty of competition last week. While the weather wasn’t exactly sunny and 75 degrees, Waterloo’s track & field program was able to open its season with a home Capitol Conference traingular, inviting Marshall and Cambridge, on Tuesday, April 9.

While visiting Marshall had an impressive meet, winning 24 of the varsity events, there were still some positive results for host Waterloo to be proud of, as well.

The Pirates had two first place finishes. Senior Benny Marshall earned them an individual one in the long jump with his distance of 18’2”. Junior Kameron Ring wasn’t far behind in the event with a distance of 16’11”. The boys 4x800 meter relay team, comprised of juniors Harrison Schaefer and David Cefalu, freshman Mason Dolfin, and senior Natanael Mora Contreras, won with a time of 9:43.22.

Cefalu went on to have some individual success, too, placing second in the 1,600 meter run with a time of 5:15.44. Elsewhere individually, junior Kellan Smith finished second in the discus and fourth in the shot put with throws of 102’10” and 35’8”, respectively. Senior Alisa Sheshina was also runner-up in the pole vault with a height of 7’6”.

Two days later, Waterloo headed off to Mayville High School for the Berry Invite, hosted on Thursday, April 11.

Waterloo finished in sixth place out of nine teams in both the boys and girls standings. The highlight of the day was a pair of second place finishes in the boys field events. Benny Marshall was runner-up in the long jump with a distance of 18’7” and sophomore Ben Ugorji was second in the discus with a throw of 121’9”.

The 800 meter run was also favorable for the Pirates as both the boys and girls earned third place finishes. Harrison Schaefer did it for the boys with a time of 2:19.59. Senior Corryn Retzloff nabbed her spot with a time of 2:57.29.

Elsewhere, David Cefalu earned fourth in the 400 meter dash, Kameron Ring placed fifth in the 200 meter dash and fourth in the triple jump, and the boys 4x800 meter relay team earned third.

Waterloo’s season carries on with a similar look this week. The Pirates will head to Belleville High School for a conference quad on Tuesday, April 16. They’ll be facing off against host Sugar River as well as Columbus and Lodi. Waterloo will close the week by participating in an eight-team invitational at Horicon High School on Friday, April 19.
