WATERLOO — Waterloo residents and beyond gathered Thursday evening in Fireman’s Park for concessions, beautiful weather and the first summer concert of the year.

Madison-based band Bad Habit, specializing in classic rock hits from the 1970s and ‘80s, kicked off the first performance in Fireman Park’s main stage, decorated with string lights for an ambient after-dark atmosphere.

Before the performance began at 6 p.m., summertime tunes including Hank Williams’ “Honky Tonk Blues” filled the park, setting the mood for those in attendance.

Friends of Waterloo Fireman’s Park began carrying concessions an hour before the concert started, including brats, chips and soft drinks, while a shaved ice trailer parked behind the stage offered a frozen treat in a variety of flavors.

Bad Habit kicked off their evening performance with Bob Seger’s “Old Time Rock and Roll,” followed by “Passionate Kisses” by Mary Chapin Carpenter, “Brown Eyed Girl” by Van Morrison, “Give Me One Reason” by Tracy Chapman, “Crying in the Rain” by The Everly Brothers, “Polk Salad Annie” by Elvis Presley (also paying homage to Tony Joe White) and “Be My Baby” by The Ronettes.

“That’s kind of what this band is about — old time country, rock n roll, that kind of thing… just look at the color of our hair, for crying out loud,” one of Bad Habit’s singers, Susie Platt said.

Watchers danced at their picnic tables while some even took to the grassy area in front of the stage to show off their moves.

Bad Habit will return on the afternoon of July 4 from 2-5 p.m., with other bands like The Rusty Hearts performing throughout the holiday weekend as well. A firework show will take place in the evening, Platt said.
