    Boys tennis: Warriors win Badger Large title

    Taking second overall at the Badger Conference meet at Nielsen Tennis Stadium on Friday and Saturday, the Waunakee boys’ tennis team emerged as champions of the Badger Large Conference.

    At No. 1 singles, freshman Nevan Lipari won his first two matches, before a loss to Milton’s Reid Washkoviak sent him to the consolation round, where Lipari lost to Nathan Posset.

    Noah Sell took a similar route at No. 2 singles, dropping a match to Edgewood’s Joe Powless to move to the consolation round. Beaver Dam’s Myles Nampel defeated Sell to finish third.

    At No. 3 single, Levi Christian won the flight, downing Stoughton’s Logan Yahn, DeForest’s Christopher Sorenson, Baraboo’s Daniel Olson and Monona Grove’s Taite Thomas to take first.

    Marc Fleissner, Waunakee’s No. 4 singles player, made it all the way to the championship match, winning over Reedsburg’s Casey Weis, Stoughton’s Chris Cooksey and Oregon’s Clayton Mardak in succession. In the finals, Fleissner fell to Edgewood’s Sawyer Korb.

    Waunakee’s George Zimbric and Jaxon Wipperfurth won their first-round match against Milton’s Braden Mace and Aiden Steinke but lost to Sauk Prairie’s Ayden Wildman and Sebastian Gavol in the next round.

    At No. 2 doubles, Owen Manley and Copeland Leitz took first overall, after opening with a bye. They beat Fort Atkinson’s Scott Butzen and Brandon Schulz and Monona Grove’s Carson Kornstedt and Will Card to reach the finals, where Leitz and Manley downed Brady Kunkel and Nic Korovets.

    The Warriors also won a conference title at No. 3 doubles, as Louis and Charlie Zimbric used an opening-round bye as a springboard to the championship. They defeated Oregon’s Mitchell Remy and William Ress and Edgewood’s Jordan Chesmore and John Buye. In the finals, the Zimbrics downed Baraboo’s Elliot Meyer and Drake Allard.

    Waunakee 6, Baraboo 1Sweeping the singles matches in straight sets, the Warriors warmed up for the Badger Conference meet by beating the Thunderbirds.

    Lipari and Sell faced tough opponents, winning over David Wetzel 6-3, 6-3 and Logan Bradley 7-5, 6-3, respectively, at Nos. 1 and 2 singles. Fleissner was pushed at No. 4 singles, coming out on top 6-3, 7-5 over Michael Barahona.

    Manley and Leitz defeated Maguire Stevens and Brady Kunkel 6-1, 6-3 at No. 2 doubles and Louis and Charlie Zimbric eased past Drake Allard and Elliot Meyer 6-0, 6-1.
