    Boys lacrosse: Top-ranked, undefeated Warriors top Oregon to reach state semfinals

    Waunakee moved a step closer to a return trip to the boys’ lacrosse state final game with a 13-5 win Saturday over Oregon in postseason play.

    The Warriors move on to play Middleton on Tuesday, June 4, at Warrior Stadium in a state semifinal game for the right to go to Sun Prairie’s Ashley Stadium, site of the state finals. Waunakee rallied to defeat the Cardinals 7-6 earlier this season.

    Gunnar McFadden had four goals against Oregon, while Justin Sawicki and Charlie King each had a hat trick. Ethan Evans chipped in with two goals and Sam Hogland had one.

    Hogland also had an assist, as did McFadden, Sawicki and Wade Bryan, who also scooped up three groundballs. Cole Savola also had three groundballs, with Adrian Millin finishing with two.

    Bryan led the way in forced turnovers/takeaways with five, as Hogland finished with four and Michael Mercuri, Nate Samson and Jake Duren collected two apiece.

    In net, Nate Olsen had six saves.

    After a close first quarter, the No. 1 ranked, undefeated Waunakee boys’ lacrosse team pulled away from Madison in a 10-4 WIAA regional win on Thursday, as Gunnar McFadden netted a hat trick.

    Ethan Evans totaled two goals, while Wade Bryan, Brandon Sawicki, Cole Savola, Justin Sawicki and Charlie King also scored goals.

    King dished out three assists, as McFadden recorded two helpers and Evans had an assist.

    Logan Ehle scooped up four groundballs, with Bryan and Justin Sawicki collected three apiece.

    Ehle also had five forced turnovers/takeaways. Michael Mercuri finished with four, while Bryan and Nate Samson had three apiece.

    Waunakee opened the postseason on Tuesday, May 28, by dismantling the WNS Wolfpack 21-2. It was 15-0 at the half.

    McFadden had six goals and eight assists, while King finished with five goals and three assists. Justin Sawicki chipped in with three goals and two assists, and Taggert McKelvey added four goals and an assist.
