What: Waupaca Community Theatre presents the Broadway version of “Little Shop Of Horrors”

    When: 7 p.m. July 27; 2 p.m. July 28; 7 p.m. Aug. 1, 2 and 3; and 2 p.m. Aug. 4

Where: Waupaca High School Performing Arts Center, E2325 King Road

Admission: $15 for adults and $10 for children 10 and under in advance at our.show/LSOH; $17 for adults and $12 for children 10 and under at the door.

Background: The show, with its delectable and electrifying pop/rock score, is based on the 1960 film by Roger Corman and features book and lyrics by Howard Ashman and music by Alan Menken, the creative duo responsible for “The Little Mermaid,” “Beauty & The Beast” and “Aladdin.”

“Little Shop Of Horrors” follows Seymour Krelborn, a meek and dejected assistant at a floral shop who happens upon a strange plant, which he affectionately names “Audrey 2” after his crush at the shop. Little does he know that this strange and unusual plant will develop a soulful R&B voice, a potty mouth, and an unquenchable thirst for human blood. As Audrey 2 grows bigger and meaner, the carnivorous plant promises limitless fame and fortune to Seymour, as long as he continues providing a fresh supply of blood. Just when it’s too late, Seymour discovers Audrey 2’s extra-terrestrial origins and true drive for world-domination.

The ‘60’s doo-wop and Motown-flavored score includes the title song, “Skid Row,” “Somewhere That’s Green,” “Feed Me” and “Suddenly, Seymour” and is supported by an 11-piece pit orchestra.

What they’re saying: “I love that we have a live pit band, not just pre-recorded backing tracks,” said Teng Vang of Stevens Point, playing the role of Seymour. “That’s a luxury that few groups in the area are lucky enough to have. People will appreciate seeing both familiar faces and new faces – a sign that our organization is growing and evolving.”

“This is my family’s third production with WCT. When we auditioned for “The Little Mermaid” in 2020, we had no idea we’d be hooked for life,” said Audrey Nusz of Waupaca, playing the role of Mrs. Luce/Ensemble. “Our theater friends quickly felt more like family and we love spending the summer working with them. One of my favorite parts is the fun costumes.”

Take-home message: "Some have big hopes and dreams, but let their inner saboteur take control," said director Justin Schilling. "Others sometimes let greed take over. No money in the world can buy enough happiness in your life if you can’t spend it with the ones you love. 'Little Shop Of Horrors' makes us take a step back and appreciate what matters. Everything is always greener on the other side."
