Several community members joined Waverly Village Council prior to the June 26 council meeting to take part in a ribbon cutting ceremony marking the completion of the renovation of the council chambers in Canal Park.

Pike County Chamber of Commerce Tourism Development Director Chandler Grooms started by talking about how this project was a long time coming and has taken six months to come to life.

”We’ve been waiting for this day for a long time,” Grooms said. “We’ve (the chamber) been talking, planning and working with the village of Waverly. I know they have been patient. Those of you that have been here to previous council meetings all I can say is ‘Wow’. What a transformation it is.”

Waverly Economic Development Administrator Shelly Anderson talked about what this building will be not just for council, but what it could mean to the village as a whole.

”The transformation of our village building, including replacing the roof, council chambers and the mayor’s office is true testament to dedication and hard work of all involved,” Anderson said. “It is very exciting to see the building restored. I would like to extend my gratitude to council and the residents of the village for their patience and support through the renovation process.”

Anderson thanked the contractors who transformed the council chambers: Combs Heating and Cooling, Ohio Valley Technology, DiPaolo Builders and Next Generation Construction.

”Your support and enthusiasm for this project has been greatly appreciated,” Anderson said. “None of this could be done without you.

”As we continue to revitalize our community, I am confident that this project will serve as a shining example of what can be achieved with teamwork and determination.”

Councilman Skymr Bevens talked about how he was hesitant to spend money on this building at first but is pleased with the end result.

”When we first started talking about doing this project, I had some reservations about investing money in this building just because of the condition it was in,” Councilman Bevens said. “But to see this many people turn out for a ribbon cutting ceremony gives me some comfort and makes me think this was a worthwhile endeavor.

“It’s tough to encourage people to invest in you if you’re not willing to invest in yourself. So hopefully this serves as a reminder and a symbol for the community,” Bevens said.

Mayor Richard Henderson thanked representatives from state elected officials offices as well as recounted “Frank and the News” being filmed in the old building.

”The old traditions that were done in here; we don’t want to forget and it’s fun reliving them. It’s time to move on and what we’ve done is outstanding,” Henderson said.
