NORTHAMPTON COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) — A preliminary investigation into a single-vehicle crash that killed two people in Northampton County Sunday morning indicates that the vehicle went off the road before catching fire and trapping them inside, according to Virginia State Police.

The investigation indicated that that the driver of a 2022 Toyota Rava was heading northbound on Route 13 at the intersection with Stumptown Drive just south of Eastville around 7:38 a.m. Sunday when it drove off the road, struck a ditch and a culvert before becoming fully engulfed in flames, State Police said.

The driver and his passenger, who State Police identified as 79-year-old Arthur Wilmer Smith and his wife, 77-year-old Susan Alice Smith of Norristown, Pennsylvania, were trapped inside the vehicle and died as a result of their injuries, State Police said.

State Police said neither speed nor alcohol were contributing factors in the crash, and said their next-of-kin have been notified.
