Chicago man charged for plotting to kill witnesses in upcoming murder trial

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — A Chicago man has been indicted for allegedly hiring a hitman to kill two witnesses in a murder trial.

Christopher Yates, 39, has been indicted on federal charges for allegedly plotting to kill two potential witnesses in his cousin's upcoming murder trial.

According to the federal indictment, Yates allegedly recruited a man by paying him $250 to carry out the killings and provided him with a handgun and ammunition.

The Chicago man has been charged with two counts of murder-for-hire and one count of unlawful transfer of a firearm and ammunition. Yates was arrested on July 31 and he remains detained in federal custody without bond.

He could face more than 30 years in prison.

Yates’ cousin is currently behind bars on charges for allegedly shooting two people and killing one of them in 2020.
