Chicago heatwave: Here's where you can cool off

(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Extreme heat arrived in the Chicago area on Monday, with real-feel temperatures reaching triple digits early this week. According to the National Weather Service, Tuesday is expected to be even hotter.

NWS Chicago issued an excessive heat watch for the area, which will remain in place until Tuesday evening.

Officials said temperatures could feel as hot as 105 degrees on Monday and up to 110 degrees on Tuesday.

Residents were reminded to drink lots of fluids, stay out of the sun and to check up on their relatives and neighbors, as the extreme heat increases the chance of heatstroke and heat-related illnesses. Signs of heatstroke include: a body temperature at or above 103 degrees, dizziness, nausea, a throbbing headache and a rapid pulse.

With Chicago Public Schools set to return to session this week, CPS Chief Executive Officer Pedro Martinez sent a letter to families and staff to inform them an action plan has been prepared to deal with the heat.

All classrooms have air conditioning, and CPS will make sure students and staff will be sufficiently hydrated.

If heat becomes excessive, gym classes and recess will be held indoors, classroom shades will be drawn and overhead lights, computers, monitors, and appliances will be shut off when not needed.

The letter also said students should be sent to school in appropriate clothing for the heat and full water bottles.
