Slow Roll Buffalo begins 11th season of Monday bike rides

Buffalo, N.Y. (WBEN) - Slow Roll Buffalo is ready to begin a new season of free Monday community bike rides.

Anyone is invited to take part in weekly 10-mile rides that explore different Buffalo neighborhoods.

"What folks need to know about Slow Roll Buffalo is that not only will you have an opportunity to participate in a 10 mile bike ride, you'll also have the ability to learn about the community we're riding in," said Janelle Brooks, President of Slow Roll.

The first ride, Monday, May 13, starts at 6:30 p.m. ET at Roswell's Outreach and Engagement Center on Michigan Avenue at Maple Street, before traveling to the Jefferson Avenue Corridor in the Coldsprings neighborhood.

"We'll talk about the great work that they're doing at the community engagement center, and and we will also ride a mile in silence tonight to remember the victims of the 5/14 massacre two years ago," Brooks explained.

New locations this year include the Old First ward Block Party Ride on June 3. Sperry Park Community Ride on July 15, and a Ship Canal Commons Ride on July 29.

Brooks said they will be returning to a number of places where people have asked us to return.

The number of riders change by the week, depending on weather. Ridership peaks typically around the Memorial Day ride. The highest number of riders, for a given week last year, was just under a thousand.

Anyone can ride. Brooks said while helmets are encouraged for everyone, they are required for those under the age of 14.

"Check your bike, make sure your tires have air. We have support crews who can adjust seats or top off the air in tires," added Brooks.
