CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WBOY) — The West Virginia State Treasurer’s Office has announced that its Unclaimed Property Division returned nearly $28 million over the last fiscal year, a new record.

Unclaimed property are assets that have been inactive for an extended period of time and so get turned over to the state. State Treasurer Riley Moore told 12 News that he is hoping his office returns as much as $90 million by the end of his tenure as State Treasurer.

A lot of these unclaimed properties are those of companies and public institutions. Treasurer Moore said that one of the more memorable unclaimed properties his office helped return was a lost trust fund of over $1 million that was returned to Mannington Middle Library. The trust fund was originally set up by one of the first women to practice medicine in West Virginia, Dr. Phoebia Moore.
