GRAFTON, W.Va. (WBOY) — The second annual Taylor County Back-to-School Bash took place at Grafton High School Friday evening as students get ready to head back to school next week.

Taylor County Schools and Communities in Schools organized the back-to-school bash which featured organizations and local businesses passing out free school supplies to students and resource information to parents.

“So, I just think it’s important because it makes the kids feel a little bit better, so they have their own supplies, and they got to pick it out. And some families can’t afford it, so being able to have it for free and let them have that feeling of coming back to school, fresh start,” Communities in Schools Site Coordinator for Grafton High School Jennifer Eskridge said.

Eskridge also said that Communities in Schools is a nationwide program and that First Lady Cathy Justice brought the program to the Mountain State with a goal of having it in all 55 counties. She added that it helps families connect with the schools while helping the schools provide information and make connections with students.

“They are given information from each of those agencies, so the parents, the kids get a little something that’s fun and the parents get informational brochures etcetera so that the two entities can better understand what’s available,” Superintendent of Taylor County Schools John Stallings said.

The first day of school for students in Taylor County schools is Thursday, August 22.
