FAIRMONT, W.Va. (WBOY) — To celebrate the arrival of the Class of 2028 to Fairmont State University, staff and faculty gathered with them at the Feaster Center on Friday to officially welcome them to campus.

The convocation ceremony included a performance by the marching band and speeches by Fairmont State leadership and President Mike Davis. The speeches encouraged the Class of 2028 to make the most of their time at Fairmont State and engage with each other as well as the community.

12 News spoke with two Fairmont State freshmen to hear about what they’re most excited about in this upcoming year. Mikenzie Davis said that she’s looking forward to exploring college, but that she is afraid that she’ll miss her family in Ransom. Addison Tenney said that while she’s looking forward to studying forensics and expanding her horizons, she foresees that the coursework will be challenging.

With many students likely having similar feelings of excitement and concern, Davis said he feels it’s important to have convocation ceremonies to bring the community together.

”We’re going to support each other. We’re going to be there for each other. Getting everybody together in one room and being able to spread that message just kicks off what they’re about to experience for the next four years,” Davis said. “I think the big message of today is they have to show up. We’re going to create a lot of great opportunities for them, but they have to be a part of that.”

The ceremonies ended with the Class of 2028 squeezing together in the bleachers to get a class photo.
