EYEWITNESS NEWS (WBRE/WYOU) — A section of I-476 was closed for around 16 miles due to a crash Wednesday morning.

Crews tell 28/22 News a crash occurred on I-476 Southbound shutting down the roadway from mile marker 117 Clarks Summit to Wyoming Valley, which is around 16 miles.

Officials said around 3:00 a.m. a dump truck carrying 23 tons of milling, which is a recycled asphalt pavement, hit the railroad bridge on the turnpike.

The dump truck then traveled about 600 feet down the road, damaging a sign on the railroad bridge, parts of the road, and six barriers.

Vehicles behind the crash were detoured off the turnpike on the northbound side and nearby ramps were blocked off, as crews assessed the damage.

At this time the condition of the driver is still unknown.

We spoke to drivers in the area as more vehicles were getting detoured from the ramp.

“Well, I’m driving to Clarks Summit so I’ll probably notice more traffic,” said Brian McCabe from Old Forge.

A driver pointed out the closure’s impact ahead of the busy travel weekend.

“I can’t imagine that being closed down, especially on this kind of weekend you know with Labor Day and everything coming up so I guess it’s probably a mess up there,” expressed Ron Sompel from Moosic.

There is no major damage to the bridge besides the sign and scuff marks.
