Motorcycle passenger killed, driver airlifted after crash near Loris, authorities say

HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — A 21-year-old North Carolina man was killed and another person was critically injured overnight in a motorcycle crash along Highway 701 near Loris, according to authorities.

Hunter Shuman of Nakina, North Carolina, was a passenger and died at the scene when the motorcycle went off the road and hit a guardrail, the Horry County Coroner’s office said Friday afternoon. He was wearing a helmet.

Horry County Fire Rescue was called to the area near the North Carolina border at about 2:20 a.m. Friday. The South Carolina Highway Patrol said the driver was flown to a local hospital.

The motorcycle was moving north on Highway 701 when it traveled off the left of the road and crashed, state troopers said.

No additional information was immediately available. The South Carolina Department of Public Safety is investigating.
