Florence teen to be tried as adult in August 2023 drive-by shooting, police say

FLORENCE COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — A Florence County teenager who faces more than a dozen counts of attempted murder stemming from a drive-by shooting a year ago has been moved from a juvenile facility to the county’s detention center because authorities plan to charge him as an adult, police said.

Laquan Antawn McCall, now, 17, was transferred to the jail from a state Department of Juvenile Justice facility on Thursday, records show. He is being held without bond on seven counts of attempted murder in connection with the Aug. 22, 2023, shooting at a home in the 400 block of E. Pine Street.

Jeshon Hines, who was 18 at the time, and another juvenile have also been arrested in the case. Police said last September the shooting stemmed from things said in a music video.

“McCall was originally charged as a juvenile … and taken to DJJ,” a police spokesman said.”He has since turned 17 and the court was petitioned to charge him as an adult.  He has been transferred to FCDC since he turned 17.”

The shooting took place at about 6:30 p.m., and at least two bullets hit the residence where multiple people, including several juveniles, were inside or on the front porch, a police report said. Two of the juveniles told officers that someone in the front passenger seat of a black vehicle going south on Jarrott Street shot at them.

Several other people inside the home reported hearing between five and 10 gunshots but did not see anything, the report said. Officers collected nine shell casings from Jarrott Street.
