MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) — The Myrtle Beach Art Museum has walls covered in money as it features a unique collection of money-themed art this summer

“Cultural Currency” is a nationally traveling exhibit that is bringing in art enthusiasts and quite the crowd this summer, said William Miller, the museum’s institutional planning coordinator. It features prints, paintings, mixed media, all types of artwork that have money as the medium.

“We thought it would be a good crowd-pleaser,” Miller said.

“Cultural Currency” will be on display inside the art museum until Sept. 22. Miller said the word is getting out about the exhibition because of how interesting and welcoming it is for all ages.

“They are blown away at all the different ways the artists have used money or used it as inspiration for their work and what they explore [such as] inflation, stretching of money,” he said.

One piece in particular is attracting a lot of attention.

“The burger money, a lot of people take selfies with that and try to take a bite out of it,” Miller said.

The contemporary art from the Riemer collection was started in 1995 by Louise and Davis Riemer. The couple are investment advisers who love art.

“They decided to limit their collection of art to things dealing with currency, money, investments etc.” Miller said.

If you are also feeling moved by this style of art, the museum has an opportunity for you. It’s offering free art workshops from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on every Saturday in August. They are open to all ages.
