LAURINBURG, N.C. (WBTW) — Police in Laurinburg are investigating a shooting and ATV crash that killed an 18-year-old man and critically injured two others.

Officers responded to the area of Deluca and Berry Streets at about 8 p.m. Thursday for a call of shots fired and found a 14-year-old boy lying next to the road who said he didn’t know if he had been shot or not, police said.

Officers also found Zahquan Thyzee Stewart, 18, dead in the bushes next to an ATV that had crashed into a tree. They also learned that a 13-year-old boy with a gunshot wound had already been taken to Scotland Memorial Hospital in a private vehicle.

Investigators determined that all three had been riding the ATV together on Deluca Street and were passed by two other males who shot at the ATV, hitting the 13-year-old victim and causing the driver, Stewart, to lose control and strike a tree.

The 13-year-old victim was later flown to a different medical facility in critical condition. The 14-year-old was also flown from the scene in critical condition.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call Laurinburg police Detective Sgt. J. Cooke at 910-276-3211.
