MURRELLS INLET, S.C. (WBTW) — A Murrells Inlet man has spent the last eight months working on creating a nonprofit organization to benefit people with mental health illnesses.

Ben Greenzweig said the labor of love came after personal struggles with mental health conditions that also have affected his family and friends. He collaborated with Owen Muir, a friend and New York-based psychiatrist, to create the Living Water Mental Health BRAIN Treatment Center.

“Over the years, I noticed that he started working with a whole new treatment called neuromodulation,” Greenzweig said. “Using various kinds of stimulation for the brain that’s drug-free and non-invasive. I started reading what he was publishing, and the results were unbelievable.”

Muir specialized in a treatment called transcranial magnetic stimulation, an FDA-approved regimen that uses electromagnetic waves to target specific parts of the brain.

“Things like where depression and anxiety live,” Greenzweig said. “And then work to get that section of your brain firing in sync, the way your brain was meant to go.”

Muir’s use of neuromodulation to treat PTSD also captured Greenzweig’s interest — and it’s as simple as wearing a cap while playing a video game.

Greenzweig said he hopes to secure a location within the next several weeks and open sometime in October. You can donate to the GoFundMe here .
