CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – A state-funded project that allows 12 underrepresented creators to develop their film, television, or documentary projects is now accepting applications for the seven-month program.

The WIDE ANGLE PROJECT is a film and TV lab sponsored by the SC Film Commission and Trident Technical College. Twelve creators will be chosen for the program, which begins in November.

Those chosen must develop the script, treatment, deck business strategies, and overall project with help from mentors’ small groups, peer review, and other methods. Participants must also commit to the schedule and workload.

“This is a targeted way to promote and foster the elements that are key to a strong in-state film industry,” said Matt Storm, Director of the South Carolina Film Commission. “Developing a diversified talent and product pool with a greater variety of unique perspectives only expands our creative capacity and potential.”

Creators who have participated in the past include Destiny Macon, a 2022 finalist in the American Black Film Festival’s annual HBO Short Film Award, and KJ Kearney, organizer of the Black Food Fridays Instagram, which won a 2024 James Beard Award for Social Media.

At the end of the program, creators will attend a pitch conference in May 2025. At the conference, participants will pitch their project to a panel of industry executives and South Carolina film and business professionals.

Gillian Rose, former NBCUniversal Executive and Executive Producer for Soho Moon, recently joined WIDE ANGLE as a consultant.

“Building out this type of developmental infrastructure is an exciting process,” said Rose. “I am so impressed by what the team has accomplished so far and am pleased to be part of this great initiative.”

The application deadline is October 4, and those selected will be notified by October 31.
