Practice safe driving this school year with these 5 safety tips

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – As students head back to school, the South Carolina Department of Public Safety (SCDPS) is reminding drivers to practice safe driving habits. To help keep everyone safe on the roads, SCDPS shared a video highlighting five essential safety tips to remember during the school year.

1. Plan ahead and give yourself extra time to get where you’re going

With school buses back on the roads and more traffic near schools, it’s important to account for possible delays. Giving yourself extra time helps you avoid the temptation to speed or drive aggressively.

2. Always stay buckled and limit distractions behind the wheel

Wearing your seatbelt is the simplest way to protect yourself in the event of an accident. Minimizing distractions, such as phone use, ensures you stay focused on the road, particularly during busy school commute times.

3. Stay alert and watch for buses, bus stops, and school zones with lower speed limits

School zones and bus stops are areas with high foot traffic and lower speed limits for a reason. Being vigilant in these areas helps protect children and ensures compliance with traffic law

4. Don’t block crosswalks that may be used by children walking or cycling to school

Blocking a crosswalk forces pedestrians to walk around your vehicle, which can put them in danger. Always stop before the crosswalk line to keep these pathways clear and safe for children.

5. Be mindful of drop-off and pick-up areas as traffic is heavier near schools

Schools often experience significant traffic during drop-off and pick-up times. Be patient and follow any posted signs or instructions from school staff to keep these areas orderly and safe.
