Interested in an new career? Driver and Vehicle Services are hiring 30 new examiners.

Reserving an appointment with the DVS can be difficult according to Program Director of Driver Services Jody-Kay Peterson.

"We've had a backlog for quite some years now. "So getting the 30 new additional position is going to assist so much with additional appointments here in the future."

In one day the DVS could administer close to 1,600 tests, which includes both the road and written exams. That means new examiners will need to be thoroughly trained.

"The training for an examiner who's coming in, they're different levels with an examiner," says Petreson. "It can take you anywhere from six months to nine months to be fully trained."

Applicants will also have to pass a finger print and background check. This comes about thanks to additional funding from the state Legislature. That is allowing Driver and Vehicle Services to hire the new workers.

Some of the duties include administering vision screenings, and aiding in the written and road tests.

Peterson says being bilingual is helpful, but overall, they're just looking to employ good people.

"It's a position where if you love meeting people, you love wanting to have a meaningful impact on your community," Peterson tells WCCO. "This is a great way to help the public to navigate those essential driving and vehicle services."

Peterson says having a state job equates to good pay and opportunities for promotion.
