CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — Renovations are coming to the Virginia Theatre in Champaign, and upgrades to the fly wheel system are going to cost more money.

The Champaign Park District said it needs more money for the computer work. Officials estimated it would cost around $240,000. They were approved from the Champaign Park Foundation to seek nearly $400,000 more from the Restoration Fund. Now, they’re asking the Park Board for approval to continue the assignment.

The park district’s executive director said despite the higher price tag, their goal is to keep moving forward with the project.

“This is a critical piece of equipment for the theater in order for us to continue doing the types of shows that we do,” Sarah Sandquist said. “And so, we want to have components that function properly and are up-to-date and just, you know, provide a safe environment for the patrons and for the performers as well.”

The Park Board will make a decision on okay-ing the money. They will meet tomorrow.
