URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — The Krannert Center for the Performing Arts is hosting an Opening Weekend Party this September to welcome in their 2024-2025 season.

It will take place Sept. 6-7 and will feature live performances, food, workshops, interactive displays, and family-friendly activities. The events are free.

“A lot of people think Krannert Center is where you go see the symphony or ballet, wearing your best suit,” said Sean Kutzko, Krannert Center’s Assistant Communications Director. “But we offer so much more than that, as our Opening Weekend Party shows! There’s dozens of live performances all season long that embrace all audiences, and our Weekend Party shows off the diversity and joy in the artists we host all season long.”

To kick off the weekend, Pittsburgh-based group Squonk will lead a community parade from the Quad to the Krannert Center’s outdoor amphitheater. There, they will perform with other headliners like Brazilian master percussionist Cyro Baptista, hip-hop dance companies Los Angeles’ Versa-Style Street Dance Company, New York City’s Ladies of Hip-Hop, and Chicago’s Era Footwork Crew, and chart-topping reggae band SOJA.

A dance party featuring DJ Spinn will round out the Friday evening festivities.

Squonk will return to the stage on Saturday with a special audience participation performance. The Era Footwork Crew, Versa-Style Street Dance Company, and DJ Spinn will also return for a hip-hop cipher.

Workshops will include “Breathe” and “Classical Music for a Meditative Mindset” featuring pianist Chad Lawson. These meditative workshops will play selections from Lawson’s latest album, “Where We Are.”

Paul Dresher’s Sound Maze will be showcased throughout the weekend. The Sound Maze is an interactive installation from The Improviser’s Exchange, led by Jason Finkleman of the Krannert Center. It will be open to hands-on music-makers of all ages.

Guided canvas-painting from Prism Studios and a photo booth from Liv & Joy will also be available.

“Opening Weekend is always a celebration of everything Krannert Center offers our community,” Kutzko said. “Be sure to stop by, join the joy, and help us launch our 55th season of world-class music, theatre and dance performances from some of the greatest artists around the globe; no tuxedo required!”
